Hygge – What’s it all about?

You may have heard of this term a lot recently, so what is Hygge?

By definition it is the Danish art of living well and staying cosy. Pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’, the word is becoming increasingly recognisable. The term is actually Norwegian and means ‘well-being’. Its about creating a warm and cosy environment mainly in your own home. It embraces the simple things in life that makes us happy, from cosying up on a cold evening with candles lit and a roaring fire, to spending time with your family and friends.

The high season of Hygge in Denmark is Christmas, this is when the Danish really go to town. Hygge exists all year round in Denmark but its during the winter months and Christmas that its really embraced. Because the Dane’s experience very long dark days during winter they try and embrace this by creating cosy atmospheres. Lighting candles, wrapping up in warm oversized scarves and blankets and drinking warm hearty drinks such as mulled wine all help to make those long dark days a little more bearable.

Without realising it these things have started to filter into our own way of life without us knowing that this has been a celebrated way of life in Denmark for a long time. You will see influences of this in the home trends at the moment. Grey is currently a go to colour for home decor and Hygge is very much of a Scandinavian style in interior design with grey and white being used predominantly in these types of schemes.

The style of Hygge is influencing our styles and trends in the home and you will find lots of ideas and items available to help you ‘Hygge’ your home. Here are some of my top picks for this coming Autumn/Winter.
